WEEKEND SPOTLIGHT
The Technology Tailor

This month we chat with Alex Goldfayn, host of the Technology Tailor, heard Saturdays from 6-8pm. Alex is an expert at helping people integrate 21st Century technology into their everyday lives. This isn't a show just about gizmos and gadgets. It is about how to use the latest high-tech tools to make your life better. Be sure to check out Alex's show and read below to get to know a little more about him!
----------------------------------

What's your background in technology and what's your background in radio?

I wrote a Chicago Tribune column, called "My Tech," in the business section for about five years. I covered consumer electronics for the column and frequent feature stories, as well as television appearances. The industry is unnecessarily complicated and hard to understand. I try to translate and help listeners understand what's new and what's worth their hard-earned money. The Technology Tailor Show is the lowest-tech technology talk show on the air!

Before we launched the program several years ago, my background in radio consisted of the nine years that I knocked on WGN's door! It's the only station I even considered doing this show on, and frankly, the only station my wife would sacrifice all those Saturday night dinners for!

What do you enjoy most about doing your show?

That's easy: the conversations with listeners, which is the core of the program. It's a show about listeners' experiences, frustrations and (periodic) victories with their computers, televisions and gadgets. Most tech programs feature some expert talking at listeners. Not here: I'm dealing with the same problems and decisions as everyone listening. So on The Technology Tailor Show, we talk about it.

When you're not behind the mic, what can we find you doing?

My wife and I are big travelers. And when we're home, we're big on TV shows and movies - one reason why the HDTV, Blu-ray, and cable vs satellite topics are well-covered on the show!

When it comes to buying new technology, what's your #1 tip to listeners?

Ten minutes on the computer will save you at least 10 percent on whatever you're shopping for. Once you've nailed down what product you're pulling the trigger on, Google it. Then click on the shopping link, and see what prices various retailers have for it. Visit Amazon.com's electronics store and check the price there. Then check with Abt Electronics (Disney World for Adults), which is the best real-world tech retailer in the Midwest. If you've decided to spend the money, you might as well find the best possible price. Just take care to buy it from a trusted retailer. If you've never heard of the seller, don't buy it there!
