Garry Meier to test-drive WGN-AM afternoon shift

Long-sidelined Chicago radio veteran Garry Meier, who sat in for Cisco Cotto with John Howell on WIND-AM 560 Wednesday, next week will become the latest to test-drive WGN-AM's 1-to-4 p.m. shift. A smooth ride, and who knows where things are headed?

Meier is booked to work without a co-host Monday, Tuesday and next Thursday, backed by newsman Steve Bertrand and others, in the WGN afternoon slot that's been vacant since John Williams succeeded Spike O'Dell in the station's coveted morning drive job in December. Cubs spring training broadcasts are set for Wednesday and Friday afternoon.

"We're excited that Garry will be back in the seat, behind the mic this coming week," said Tom Langmyer, who's WGN-AM's vice president and general manager.

Meier, whose hugely successful on-air partnership with Steve Dahl ended after 14 years and whose popular pairing with Roe Conn ended after eight years, has mostly been off the air since contract talks to remain at WLS-AM 890 with Conn broke down in 2004. A 2007 return to local airwaves was cut short when CBS Radio's old WCKG-FM changed formats seven months after Meier's arrival, just as he was settling in.

Assuming Meier finds he's comfortable with WGN, and vice versa, his local history looks to make him a leading candidate for full-time work at WGN-AM, which is owned by Chicago Tribune parent Tribune Co.
