WCIU's outdoor ad campaign taps Obama's 'Hope'
March 2, 2009
Give Weigel Broadcasting-owned WCIU-Channel 26 credit for developing a new ad campaign that touches on two things sure to resonate with Chicagoans: Barack Obama and feel-good laughter.
Created internally at WCIU by Weigel Executive Vice President Neal Sabin and art directed by Christopher Kemnic and Karen Kulovitz, the new outdoor campaign is done up in the style of the now familiar "Hope" posters that were an iconic part of Obama's successful marketing and advertising campaign in the run-up to the presidential election.
In the WCIU executions, however, Obama has been replaced by images of four comedians who are key components of the television station's prime-time lineup, including the late Bernie Mac, Kelsey Grammer, George Lopez and Jerry Stiller. And though the economy is keeping us from doing many of the fun things we'd like to do, the WCIU campaign reminds us we're still free to laugh. Even better, it's something we can enjoy on WCIU without spending a fortune, though it's doubtful anyone still has a fortune to spend.
