3 Sun-Times staffers win national awards
March 5, 2009 | Sun-Times
Three Chicago Sun-Times staffers have won national recognition for education writing.
Education reporter Rosalind Rossi won first prize for beat reporting in the 2008 National Awards for Education Reporting, announced Wednesday.
She was cited by the National Education Writers Association for a wide range of news, feature and investigative stories, including a series for which she came up with an innovative way to probe an issue that had dominated Chicago's schools for months -- gun violence.
Those reports -- called "Schooled in Fear" -- also won a special citation in a best-series category for Rossi and her reporting partner on the project, Art Golab.
And editorial writer Kate Grossman got second prize for editorial writing on education for her series of editorials on school violence, "Calming Our Classrooms."
The awards will be presented at the group's annual banquet May 2 in Washington.
