Why does TV think tornados aren't dangerous during commercials?

Yesterday around 230pm, I turned the tv on to NBC5. On screen was a graphic and a crawl with a tornado warning. I watched for two seconds and then they went to a commercial in the middle of the warning. The warning was gone. I've seen this before. Why?
I'm assuming they don't mind saving your life over normal programming, but they figure your mind must be totally focused on commercials and not dying, so they take off the warning during the commercials?
