Chicago Tribune promotes Mike Kellams, Bob Fleck

Mike Kellams, the Chicago Tribune's sports editor since 2006, has been named the paper's new associate managing editor for sports, Tribune Managing Editor Jane Hirt told staff today.

Kellams succeeds Dan McGrath, a former sports and metro columnist for the Sacramento Bee who has been the Tribune's AME for sports since 2002 and was its sports editor for five years before that. McGrath will become a senior writer for the Tribune sports section.

Bob Fleck has been named the Chicago Tribune's senior vice president of advertising, Chicago Tribune Media Group President, Publisher and Chief Executive Tony Hunter informed staff Friday.

Fleck's promotion comes just four months after the 17-year Tribune veteran became its vice president of advertising. Joe Farrell, vice president of interactive sales, now reports to Fleck rather than Hunter, who noted the change would be seamless both internally and for customers.

A graduate of Ball State University, Kellams has served in a variety of editing and design capacities since joining the Chicago Tribune in 1998, including his work as the first sports editor of its commuter tabloid, RedEye. He previously worked as lead sports designer for the Detroit News and the news design coordinator for the Seattle Times.

Kellams has been a team member on three Pulitzer Prize-winning projects: the Seattle Times' investigation into Boeing's 737 aircraft, the Times' investigation of Native American casinos and the Tribune's series on the problems that plague the airline industry and O'Hare International Airport.

McGrath was deputy sports editor of the Philadelphia Inquirer before joining the Tribune. Besides working as a columnist in Sacramento, McGrath was sports editor for the San Francisco Chronicle and worked for papers in Freeport, Ill., and Reno, Nev. A graduate of Marquette University, he also was a senior editor of The National, the ambitious but short-lived 1990-91 U.S. sports daily.
