Jerry Springer gets expected Connecticut backlash

When I talked to Jerry Springer last week about NBC Universal's not-yet-finalized deal to relocate his syndicated program from Chicago to Stamford, Conn., he anticipated a backlash out East.

"My arrivals are usually met with much negative fanfare," Springer told me. "I remember my coming to Chicago."

Springer's instincts were dead-on, as John Christoffersen of the Associated Press discovered when he talked to the Rev. Stephen DiGiovani, whose St. John's Catholic Church is in line to become a neighbor of "The Jerry Springer Show" on Stamford's Atlantic Street.

In light of parishioners' complaints, DiGiovani told the AP that he plans to talk to church lawyers to see if the planned move, which will be fueled by state tax incentives, can be thwarted.

"They didn't think this was the right place for it," DiGiovanni said to Christoffersen. "I'm not very thrilled about it. ... Springer is making millions on other peoples' misery and stereotypes."
