Joyner, Others Speak Against Royalties

WASHINGTON -- March 19, 2009: Host Tom Joyner,Radio One founder/Chairperson Cathy Hughes and President/CEO Alfred Liggins, Sheridan Broadcasting President/General Counsel Ron Davenport Jr. and SVP/CFO Susan Davenport Austin, ICBC Broadcast Holdings President/COO Charles Warfield, and Glory Communications President Alex Snipe appeared on a panel this morning to brief congressional staffers on the impact a performance royalty would have on minority broadcasters.

The event was hosted by Joyner and the NAB, and moderated by Minority Media and Telecommunications Council Exec. Director David Honig.

The Performance Rights Act, which would impose performance royalties on broadcast radio, is under consideration in the House and Senate right now, and a House Judiciary Committee hearing was held on the bill last month. It is countered by the Local Radio Freedom Act, a House resolution against the royalties, which now has 149 co-sponsors.
