Veteran Chicago broadcaster Judd Sirott beat out dozens of candidates to win the opening as Cory Provus' replacement in the Cubs' radio booth.
Sirott, who works on Blackhawks broadcasts and was formerly the play-by-play voice of the Wolves, was hired by WGN-AM to work one inning each game alongside Ron Santo when Pat Hughes takes a break. He'll also host the pregame and postgame shows while providing scores and updates throughout the games.
"I'm ecstatic and I'm humbled at the same time," Sirott said. "I understand the opportunity is there and what this is about. I've been very fortunate. I could not have done this without the support of the Blackhawks, in particular John McDonough and Jay Blunk. They're been in my corner the entire time."
Sirott will assist Santo on the road and conduct interviews for the pregame show during home games. He auditioned at spring training.
"I knew right away he was the best guy," Santo said. "He was here for two games. I took him down in the clubhouse and introduced him to everybody. The two innings he did, he was a little nervous at first but then settled in.
"He's a hard worker, and I think he's going to fit in perfectly. He's got a good personality and fits all the criteria for the job."
Sirott will continue to work on Hawks broadcasts this season, though the start of the playoffs coincides with the opening of the Cubs' season. Jim Memelo will fill in for Sirott on Hawks games when Sirott is with the Cubs.
