WSCR adds Sun-Times beat reporter

Joe Cowley will be multitasking this summer. In addition to being the White Sox beat reporter for the Sun-Times, Mr. Cowley will handle the same duties for WSCR-AM (670).

He will be providing updates for the station, along with filing audio and game wrap-ups.

It is a unique arrangement since Mr. Cowley will have to wear both hats. As a one-time Sox beat reporter (a long, long time ago), I can say it is the toughest job in the sports department.

But if Mr. Cowley can pull it off, it will be a big plus for WSCR. He will be at most of the games, home and away. That will give him the kind of access and insights that you only can get by traveling with the team.

For years, ESPN has relied on print reporters to boost its coverage. I've always felt sports talk radio lagged in this area. The addition of Mr. Cowley could be the start of a trend.
