A threat by producers of Jerry Springer's Chicago-based talk show to move lock, stock and barrel to Florida reportedly delayed passage of a tax credit bill for filmmakers in Illinois.
Ruth Ratny's ReelChicago and Performink Online both are reporting that NBC/Universal, which produces Springer's show at WMAQ-Channel 5 studios in NBC Tower, lobbied to be added to the state's tax incentives that are intended to lure Hollywood movie production to Illinois.
Real or not, the threat of Springer's show moving to Florida was enough to hold up the bill and amend it to include talk shows for the first time. It's still awaiting House approval.
Why Florida? Perhaps because NBC/Universal has production facilities at its Universal Orlando theme parks, or perhaps because Springer has a home in Sarasota.
Springer's people said Monday they were unaware of the issue.
