Nate Clay thought he was joking when he offered $1,000 to the first listener who'd call in with the name of the writer of a Sam Cooke song.
That joke cost Clay a two-week suspension as weekend overnight host on Citadel Broadcasting news/talk WLS-AM (890).
Knowing how seriously the FCC deals with on-air contesting, Clay's bosses forked over the money to the correct caller who demanded his prize.
"I considered it an issue we had to take action on," said John Gallagher, president and general manager of WLS.
