Soul 106.3's lousy signal will preclude Joyner from getting good ratings here. It would sure be nice if Crawford could work out a way to improve the signal over much of the market. For example, from where I live NNW of the city, I can't get it at all. Not even with my best radio that manages to pull in most Milwaukee stations.
It only has a good signal around Gary, parts of the south side, and places like Harvey and Hammond. Sure, those are areas where Joyner is popular. But they still only represent a very limited percentage of the overall market. And, the other signal is strong only in the cornfields on the way to Rockford - next to useless.
Remember, most people (who aren't radio geeks) have little tolerance for a less than perfect signal. Can you hear the station in Naperville or Aurora or Elgin? Sure. But not well enough to garner much of an audience. If it's too weak to come in on a clock radio, then it's not a factor.
But, this was still a no-brainer because there is nowhere else for him to go in this market. If he wants to be on the air in the Chicago market, Soul 106.3 was the only place to go.
