GARRY MEIER'S "GET RON BRONZED!"
The official campaign to get Ron Santo a statue erected outside Wrigley Field
April 10, 2009
Mr. Crane Kenney, Chairman of the Chicago Cubs
Dear Mr. Kenney:
History. Tradition. These define of one of the most respected, storied, and popular franchises in all of sports. I mean, of course, The Chicago Cubs.
Loyalty. Passion. These define the team's world-wide community of die-hard fans, who, each baseball season, proudly display their deep-rooted love for the team and its century-old quest for a World Series championship.
These attributes also describe one man, whose contributions to the Chicago Cubs legacy - on and off the field - are unequaled. The man I speak of is, Number 10, "This Old Cub."
No one fully epitomizes the team's history, tradition, loyalty, and passion more than Chicago Cubs legend, Ron Santo.
Ernie Banks is "Mr. Cub," but I suggest, Ron Santo is "The Ultimate Cub."
To that end, I am formally making a request, on behalf of all Cubs fans and baseball fans everywhere, that the Chicago Cubs organization rightfully honors and immortalizes Mr. Santo with a commemorative statue placed outside of historic and hallowed walls of Wrigley Field.
Today, I am officially launching a multi-layered petition drive titled, "Get Ron Bronzed!" to unite Cubs fans and urge you that this is an idea that's time has come. Through an on-line petition and website, we will collect signatures and testimonials from Cubs fans literally all over the world, and we'll also create banners that fans can personally sign to firmly show their stamp of approval.
On my daily radio show on WGN-AM 720, I have witnessed how devoted "Cubs Nation" is to Ron Santo, and how much they love him. I first brought up this idea on the air on April 9, 2009, and the telephone lines were immediately filled with fans who endorsed the idea with great zeal.
Please, Crane (may I call you "Crane"?) give Ron Santo this unique, deserved honor. Make him forever, a "Concrete Cubbie." If any Cubs' icon should stand beside the current concrete images of Cubs icons, Ernie Banks and Harry Caray, it's Ron Santo.
And ponder this fact...Wrigley Field has been referred to as, "The Vatican of baseball parks," and look at how many statues the Vatican has!
Let's "Get Ron Bronzed!" C'mon!
Peace,
Garry Meier
