I always enjoyed Don (and Roma) when they first moved from US99 to WLS. Don always had a bit of a 'crotchety' attitude, even back in the music days. His specialty early on involved a cast of characters for which he did all the voices. Peter Suckwell, the Mary Gay Cometics truck driver...General Nuisance (and his aide Private Parts)...Ben Dover...Phil McCrackin...William Perry Mason, Football Attorney, etc. Also used to play comedy cuts from old albums in a bit he and Roma did called the Rifleman. Sounds sort of lame by today's standards, but Don never took any of it that seriously. Even though station was still positioned as playing a lot of music, you could tell Don and Roma were eager to do more of a talk show. They actually played very little music...spending a lot of time talking about current issues...albiet from a more humorous perspective than they do today. His 'conservative' personality didn't really emerge until the days just prior to the format switch.
