A STELLAR REMINDER: WMAQ-Channel 5's longtime anchor Warner Saunders, who is planning to retire sometime late next month, will be saluted at an elegant dinner gala May 16 at the Fairmont Hotel. The evening will benefit the Museum of Broadcast Communications' building fund. Civic leader and businessman Quintin Primo and lovely wife Diane are the co-chairs and Channel 5's Allison Rosati, who has been co-hosting the news for years with Saunders, is the emcee. Legendary radio host Herb Kent will be providing the dance music ... so this is going to be a fun event. For tickets: www.museum.tv.
Saunders, who has enjoyed a stellar career in broadcasting in Our Town for over 40 years, will also be honored by his station colleagues and friends at a huge retirement party scheduled for May 21 at the Museum of Science and Industry from 5:30-8:30 p.m. and open to the public.
AN UPDATE: I am sure everyone has noticed that Warner has been absent from the news desk for some weeks now due to a pelvic fracture, which I reported in my March 5 column. Apparently complications from that fracture led to an infection problem. According to Frank Whittaker, station manager and vice president of news, "Warner has been battling a stubborn infection with his hip replacement. The good news is doctors now think the infection is under control and Warner is feeling better. And he wants everyone to know he says hello and hopes to return to work sometime in May."
