Chicago is about to get the first Spanish-language station owned by an African-American company.
Starting Sept. 3, Midway Broadcasting will transform WRLL-AM (1450) into "Radio Latino," featuring a combination of locally programmed and time-brokered Spanish talk and music.
"Based on the current business climate, we see this move as a great opportunity," said Melody Spann Cooper, president and CEO of Chicago-based Midway.
For the last year, the station has been simulcasting the urban talk format of Midway's WVON-AM (1690) during the day and playing music at night. Under a unique split-license arrangement, Midway operates WRLL from 10 p.m. to 1 p.m daily.
Cooper has appointed WVON staffer Gustavo Rios as station manager of "Radio Latino."
