10 Questions with ... Nicole Gamboa

BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:

I started out my career interning at Shaker Advertising. I also interned at BSMG in Public Relations, then moved on to Starcom in their Entertainment Marketing Division and then landed a job with Big Hit Marketing. Big Hit was a marketing company that did national radio promotions and special events. My first experience was coordinating a promotion in Augusta, GA where a winner won Christina Aguilera to play at his prom. Big Hit Marketing was owned by Emmis Communications so I got to know all the people at Q101 really well and loved being a part of them. When Emmis dissolved Big Hit Marketing, the Q101 PD at the time asked me to work for them -- and I've been here in the Programming Department ever since, just moving up job titles and gaining a sister station, The Loop.

LAST NON-INDUSTRY JOB:

My family owns a bakery in Chicago, so I have worked there since I was old enough to start working, mostly as a Wedding Cake Decorator.

FIRST RECORD EVER PURCHASED:

Oh, god. I have a horrible memory; I'm not sure what it was. Michael Jackson, Madonna ... something like that.

FIRST CONCERT:

My dad brought me to a Sheena Easton concert when I was pretty young that my parents were supposed to go to but my mom got sick, so I was his fill-in date

FAVORITE BAND OF ALL-TIME:

If anyone knows me, they know I can never name a favorite anything (food, band, type of music, movie, etc). There's just too much that I like to be able to nail it down to one of anything.

1. How did you become interested in radio?

When I was working at Big Hit Marketing in the Q101 offices I loved being a part of the station. But I was always a music fan.

2. What was your favorite station to listen to when you were a kid?

Probably Z95, B96, and Rock 103.5

3. What's one thing that would surprise many people to learn about you?

Probably that I know how to decorate wedding cakes

4. Explain your role at Q101?

I basically work with the programming department on every aspect (except maybe budgets) that they deal with. I help schedule the music, promos, and live liners. I schedule the air talent. I pick the music that we play along with our new PD and meet with all the record reps to hear what's new and work on fun promotions with their artists. I go out to shows and check out new bands. I also am in charge of both of our HD-2 channels, Q2 and Loop Loud. So, I hold music meetings and schedule both stations' music. I've worked on a lot of different things at the station throughout my eight years here, so even though I didn't start my career in radio, I've definitely been thoroughly integrated in it since.

5. What part of your job do you like best? Least?

I love listening to new music and love the people I work with. There are a lot of good people working at the station, and they make each day a good day to be at work. What I like the least would probably be the constant turnover in radio. I miss working with some of the great people that aren't here anymore.

6. What makes Q101 unique?

We've got heritage with the brand, and a great staff that is always willing to go above and beyond to see the station succeed. I don't know if that makes us unique, but we definitely have a lot of people that work here that grew up with the station and really care about its success.

7. What would surprise people about the station?

How much video the station produces - we really concentrate a lot of effort on not only our on-air product, but our website as well. So, we are always looking for great video content from bands, and also from our air talent to feature online as well as on the air.

8. Fill in the blank: I can't make it through the day without _________?

Sorry, I can't divulge all my secrets

9. What is #1 music preference when you are away from the station?

Being in programming, I'm usually always listening to the station if I have the chance. If not, my music preferences are pretty wide. I'm a big music fan and I like lots of different music from different genres. Except country. I've never been much into country music.

10. What career path would you be following had it not been for this industry?

Special Events and Marketing, if I had to guess. My dream job would be writing reviews on the best vacation spots throughout the world. That way I could visit all the beautiful vacation spots and see cities all over the world and actually get paid for it.

Bonus Questions

What are your hobbies?

Being that I don't have a ton of free time, my only current hobby is working out.
