Channel 5's Art Norman retiring after 27 years

April 30, 2009

BY STELLA FOSTER Sun-Times Columnist

THE SCOOP: This columnist got the news that one of my all-time favorite broadcasters, WMAQ-Channel 5's Art Norman, is retiring this week after 27 years of news reporting. This really was upsetting to hear, especially since another broadcasting giant at that station, anchor Warner Saunders, is planning to retire in late May.

I CALLED Art and he told me why: "My lovely and beloved wife of 38 years, Ondina, is an 11-year survivor of ovarian cancer." Ondina retired from teaching five years ago and her health is not the best. "I want to take care of her and travel wherever she wants to go."

WARNER had this to say: "The heart and soul of NBC-5 is leaving. We are not going to hear that familiar, 'Art Norman here', again in the newsroom or that belly laugh that lights up a room ... He is irreplaceable."

Hey, this is such a beautiful love story, and I admire Art for loving his woman so much. His many fans and viewers won't be seeing his smiling face on a regular basis ... but his wife will! He is doing it for love!
