Good news and bad news about WLS-AM this coming weekend.
First the bad news: There will be no WLS Rewind this year.
Now the good news: WLS-AM will be airing a special presentation, "The History of WLS." The 7 hour extravaganza hosted by none other than Jeff Davis, will air this Monday (Memorial Day), from 11:00am to 6:00pm. The Big 89 is celebrating a big 85 years of radio service with this special program. "The History of WLS" will look back at the early days of the station, with shows like the National Barn Dance and artists like Gene Autry, to its famous rock & roll days with personalities Dick Biondi, Larry Lujack and John Records Landecker, and into its talk formats of the late 80's and beyond. The special was originally dome by Jeff Davis back in 1999 for WLS' 75th Anniversary, but Jeff has since updated the show and added much more content to it.
There will also be contests to win special WLS-themed merchandise like an Uncle Lar' & Little Tommy "Animal Stories" CD, copies of Scott Childers' wonderful new book "Images of America: Chicago's WLS Radio," WLS pint glasses and WLS-AM t-shirts. Listen for the classic WLS touchtones to win.
Even though the big WLS Rewind shows may be a thing of the past, it's nice to see that WLS isn't letting Memorial Day pass without a salute to its past.
