: I have a question about WLFM 87.7. Is this a commercial station? If so how can it occupy that portion of the FM spectrum reserved for non-commercial radio stations?
: I am wondering if they will change their call letters to WNUA. They are using WNUA's musical ID quite often in their test run.
It is indeed "non-commercial" right now. The commercials that are airing are coming from the satellite feed they're currently running. I'm not sure of the legalities around that.
The WNUA ID music is actually Clear Channel's Smooth Jazz ID music. All of CC Smooth Jazz stations use (or used) that same little tune, just with each city's name & frequency sung over it. WLFM-LP has subscribed and gained permission to stream the CC Smooth Jazz programing. It is the very same programming that can be heard on WNUA's HD-2 station and the very same that CC is streaming on their Smooth Jazz website. Strange, I know.
My understanding is that they cannot change their call letters to WNUA after CC dumps them because they are not a true FM station. WLFM is technically not -FM, it's -LP - an LPTV without video service. That's why you can also hear it on Channel 6 TV.
