Former WLS-TV reporter Andy Shaw joins Better Government Association

Andy Shaw, who retired in January as chief political reporter for WLS-Ch. 7, has joined the Better Government Association as executive director, the BGA announced today.

"I've spent my entire career asking politicians from presidents to park supervisors the tough questions about the governments they run with your hard-earned tax dollars," Shaw said in a statement. "I've held their feet to the fire. And now, after a short break to recharge my batteries, I'm back."

The BGA is a nonpartisan government watchdog organization established 86 years ago by citizens concerned about the growing influence of Al Capone's mob in Chicago. Its mission is to expose and combat waste, corruption and inefficiency in government through investigations, litigation and public policy studies.

Shaw, who joined WLS in 1983 after stints with the WMAQ-Ch. 5, the Chicago Sun-Times and City News Bureau, replaces Jay Stewart, who went to work for Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn earlier this year.

"In a time of unprecedented cronyism, corruption and economic peril, BGA faced a challenging task in our search for a new professional leader," Dave Lundy, the BGA's president, said in the announcement. "We needed someone who intimately understood Illinois politics and government, and was committed to change. Andy Shaw believes in fixing what's wrong with government because he's seen the mess up close and understands the consequences for real people."

Shaw told the Chicago Tribune before heading to President Barack Obama's inauguration in Washington -- his last Channel 7 assignment -- that he might have pulled the trigger on retirement too quickly as recent events had re-energized him and the economy diminished his personal nest egg.

"You see your assets disappear, you see Obama win and you see [Gov. Rod] Blagojevich raided by the FBI, and you're thinking it's the perfect storm of factors to undo a plan," Shaw said at the time. "But the plan was too far along."
