Les Grobstein takes WSCR-AM overnight slot

Les Grobstein, long a Chicago radio presence, is bringing his encyclopedic knowledge of local sports to an overnight weeknight show on CBS Radio's WSCR-AM 670, beginning Monday.

Mitch Rosen, program director at The Score, said the station believes that putting "The Grobber," 57, in the 1-to-5 a.m. slot will translate into a stronger lead-in Mike Mulligan and Brian Hanley, whose program now starts an hour because of the addition this month of Dan McNeil into WSCR's 9 a.m.-to-1 p.m. slot.

"Anytime you can have Chicago sports talk leading into morning drive it's a plus," Rosen said. "Les brings many years of Chicago sports talk knowledge to our audience. The overnight audience is, I believe, an untapped audience in Chicago.

"I started my career overnights and still remember the great amount of Chicagoans that are working, or just can't sleep," said Rosen, once a producer for the late Chicago overnight mainstay Eddie Schwartz. "Believe me, Les will keep people awake. Les cross-promoting the 'Mully and Hanley' show for people getting in their cars early, or starting their work day, will be great for us."

(Phil Rosenthal, Chicago Tribune)
