Fine arts station WFMT-FM (98.7) honcho Steve Robinson is pushing to exceed the $450,000 goal set for the station's current membership drive, which ends today. As of midday Thursday with some 30 hours left in the 10-day drive, the station had netted just shy of $400,000. Robinson admits this particular fund-raising effort was helped -- a lot -- right at the start by an anonymous $100,000 pledge, the largest in the station's history.
Otherwise, there have been more pledges at the low end of the scale and fewer bigger ones. Robinson thinks those listeners now contemplating a WFMT membership are fully aware that we are in the midst of an extended economic downtown, and he believes they are being somewhat more cautious with their pledge money. But with some aggressive efforts by the station's on-air hosts and an ample array of thank-you gifts on offer, WFMT has now reached -- or exceeded -- its goals for three pledge drives in a row. Not a record to sneeze at.
