Congratulations to the Chicago Defender newspaper! The longtime local publication has just won many John B. Russwurm Awards at the National Newspaper Publishers Association Convention, which just wrapped up in Minneapolis. Chief among the awards won is the 2009 John B. Russwurm Award for Best Newspaper in the Country, a major honor. The Defender also won 1st place in Best Use of Photographs for its coverage of last November's election night, 1st place for Best Editorial Cartoon award, and staff writer Rhonda Gillespie won 1st place in the Heritage award category. Additionally, the paper won 3rd place for Best Layout and Design, 3rd place for the John H. Sengstacke General Excellence Award, and CD reporter Wendell Hutson was runner-up in the Aid and Emergency Relief category. The John B. Russwurm Award is named after the co-publisher of the first African-American newspaper in America.
