WPWX-FM gets Sam Sylk ... finally
More than four years after WPWX-FM 92.3's plan to hire then-WGCI-FM 107.5 afternoon star Sam Sylk blew up, Power 92 is getting its man.
Crawford Broadcasting announced Sylk will be WPWX's new afternoon drive host, effective Monday. He replaces Donnie Devoe, whose exit was announced to staff on June 29th.
“I am so excited to join my new radio family," Sylk said in a statement. "Power 92 is a station that’s dedicated to giving Chicago real radio for Chicago. I can’t wait to be a part of this all-star line up."
Given the Hammond, Ind.,-based station’s history when it comes to Sylk, it's almost understandable why Power 92 Program Director Jay Alan would decline to return repeated reporter inquiries concerning Devoe’s abrupt exit and Sylk’s imminent arrival from Cleveland's WENZ-FM.
Power 92's February 2005 attempt to land Sylk fell apart after Chicago Sun-Times columnist Robert Feder reported a confidential memo from Alan to owner Donald Crawford detailing his plan to install Sylk on WPWX by mid-March. Alan's memo trashed the station's morning show at the time as "lackluster" and called Sylk "our first choice to replace our current morning team."
The hitch: Sylk's contract with Clear Channel's WGCI still had six months to go.
Sylk stayed with WGCI and, coming off seventh consecutive quarters atop the ratings, instead wound up moving in 2006 to Clear Channel's WUSL-FM in Philadelphia. But he spent just one year as morning man there before taking his old afternoon job at Radio One's WENZ.
WENZ is where Sylk was working both on-air and as program director in 2002 when WGCI promoted him from part-time weekend host to full-time weekday afternoon host.
