RIP Walter Cronkite

News emerged late Friday that Walter Cronkite died.

In an era when the role of the news media changes every day, it's worth remembering the example Cronkite set. The word "legend" is thrown around a lot, but Cronkite deserved it.

"Walter's early lessons would be well kept in mind by all of us who have followed him. And that is to keep it on the news. Tell people what happened that day, keep it short, keep it direct, and keep it accurate," "ABC World News" anchor Charlie Gibson said in a CBS press release issued late Friday.

President Barack Obama said this in the CBS release: "He brought us all those stories large and small which would come to define the 20th Century. That's why we love Walter, because in an era before blogs and e/mail cell phones and cable, he was the news. Walter invited us to believe in him, and he never let us down."

CBS will air "That's the Way It Was: Remembering Walter Cronkite," a tribute to the man who for many years defined CBS' newsgathering operation, 6 p.m. Central Sunday.
