: Rumors aside, anchor can't say why she left

: Phil Rosenthal | Tribune Media

: August 3, 2009

: When people who cover the news become the subject of news, they often realize why the public is sometimes wary of them and what they do.

: "I was reading reports about my abrupt leaving as I was still involved in negotiations with NBC," now-former WMAQ-Ch. 5 weekend anchor Anna Davlantes said Sunday. "We didn't finalize the situation until Thursday morning around 10 a.m. ... I had to call some of my pals at radio stations Wednesday night saying, 'Yo, we're still negotiating and trying to come to an agreement.' "

: In the end, Davlantes did leave Channel 5, walking away from the NBC-owned station that gave her the chance to return home to Chicago from Houston's Fox station nine years ago.

: The decision, she says, wasn't about money. But she isn't able to say much else about her negotiations, what she wanted, what the station offered and why the split occurred, for the same reasons she can't pursue her next job just yet.

: Eventually Davlantes will emerge from contractual purgatory. Perhaps then -- either in what she says, where she goes or what she ends up doing -- it will become clear what kind of opportunities, security or other benefit she sought.

: "It was time for me to move on, and I have some exciting things I'd like to be able to talk about, explaining where I might land," Davlantes said. "But there's this period of time, this interim period, where I'm very restricted. ... Hopefully that period of time won't be that long."

: Fans have reached out to her in the meantime, on her Facebook page and elsewhere. Some have offered her jobs, everything ranging from software tester to drummer in a heavy-metal band. She is grateful, but doesn't want them to worry; this sabbatical is only temporary.

: Davlantes said she hopes to use the time off for projects with the production company she recently formed. Separately, she and a partner are trying to develop a Web site that would match
those looking to donate goods and services with non-profit groups and individuals in need.

: She also wants to volunteer in the Chicago schools, reinforcing her ties to the city and market where she grew up.

: She sold her home in favor of renting a place owned by her sister, but that likely was about timing the real estate market as much as it was about giving herself mobility.

: And what's her ambition at the moment?

: "I just want to be happy," Davlantes said with a laugh. "This is a sad world right now. I just want to be happy. And I think I'm taking steps personally and professionally to be happy with this move. ... I did the same job for nine years. I'm looking for new opportunities to grow."

Anna is hot! She was the only reason why I watched NBC 5 news.
I thinks she is 70 years younger than Harry Porterfield.
