David Novarro named WFLD's A.M. co-anchor
by Phil Rosenthal, Chicago Tribune
David Novarro, whose days at Chicago's WFLD-Ch. 32 seemed numbered just a month ago, has been named its new morning co-anchor, effective immediately, the Fox-owned station confirmed today.
Novarro has a new contract and will co-anchor with Jan Jeffcoat from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m., replacing Mike Barz, who left the station last month after an investigation into an off-hours, off-site party with co-workers.
Another contender for Barz's co-anchor slot, Patrick Elwood, who had been co-anchoring the 6 a.m. hour with Jeffcoat, will report for the morning broadcasts and co-anchor the noon news with Nancy Loo.
Novarro, a nine-year veteran of WFLD whose deal was set to expire next month was expected to leave the station with the end of "The Ten," the 10 p.m. newscast he launched in 2007 with co-anchor Lauren Cohn. Channel 32 plans to replace the program Sept. 21 with syndicated reruns of NBC's "The Office."
But Barz's unexpected departure created an opening in the mornings, where Novarro was WFLD's co-anchor from 2000 until he left for "The Ten."
Novarro joined Channel 32 earlier that year after 19 years at ABC's New York flagship, WABC-TV.
