Weigel sale of South Bend TV stations unravels
Chicago-based Weigel Broadcasting's sale of its three low-power television stations in South Bend, Ind., to Schurz Communications' WSBT Inc. apparently has come apart.
The deal for WBND-TV, WCWW-TV and WMYS-TV was announced last August. According to the Schurz-owned South Bend Tribune, the transaction was contingent on receiving Federal Communications Comission approval within one year. The expectation was the the deal would be OK'ed by the end of last year, but that still hasn't happened, the paper said.
John Mann, president and general manager of WSBT, told the South Bend paper he was not sure why the FCC has not acted within the timeline established by WSBT and Weigel but both companies decided to walk away from the deal.
Neal Sabin, Weigel's executive vice president, told the Chicago Tribune that the company is aggressively moving forward with running the stations, having acquired programming syndicated episodes of "How I Met Your Mother" for fall of 2010 and Fall 2010, as well as adding several series to this fall's schedule such as "My Name is Earl," "America's Funniest Home Videos," Wendy Williams' daytime talk show.
Besides the South Bend Tribune and WSBT, Schurz's South Bend assets include the WSBT Radio Group in the South Bend.
Weigel's Chicago stations are WCIU-Ch. 26, and its digital subchannels branded as Me TV (26.2), Me Too (26.3) and This TV (26.4), as well as low-power WWME-Ch. 23.
