7 Questions with...
Charlie Meyerson

WGN Radio's Charlie Meyerson tells The Voice, among other things, why he's excited about his new gig as WGN Radio's News Director, what it was like to cover the news on 9/11, and why some might compare him to Will Ferrell's character in Anchorman.

1) You come to WGN Radio as a columnist from the Chicago Tribune's Daywatch. Tell us more about your media background.

My career is long, but it has passed far too quickly. A decade as part of the award-winning news department at WXRT, almost nine years as news and public affairs director at WNUA-FM and almost 11 years with the team building (and rebuilding and rebuilding again) chicagotribune.com. One of the highlights of my time with the Tribune was the open-door policy my friends at WGN extended to me, inviting me to file stories just about any time I felt like it.

2) What excites you most about joining WGN Radio?

I have far more answers to that question than you'd want to hear. But here are a few: The chance to work side-by-side with so many of my longtime radio friends was irresistible. Mix in the mission of reinventing radio news for the 21st Century, of introducing my esteemed newspaper and Internet colleagues to the award-winning WGN team - and the chance to do all of that without leaving iconic Tribune Tower? Who could say no?

3) Describe the most memorable day you've experienced in a newsroom.

September 11, 2001. Probably the most memorable day for a lot of people, I know. Watching the story unfold, sitting in the heart of the city as it emptied, wondering whether Chicago would be next ... That was as close as I hope to come to the feeling the world is ending.

4) What's a story before your time that you wished you had been around to cover?

The 1968 Democratic presidential convention in Chicago.

5) What's your favorite place to be in Chicago and why?

The view of the city from the museum campus is hauntingly beautiful.

6) What would be the title of your autobiography?

Save Your Work.

7) What's one thing that people would be surprised to learn about you?

I play a not-terrible jazz/rock flute. (Yes, I've heard the Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy jokes.)
