Taping shows here helps Winfrey maintain chokehold in Chicago

Oprah Winfrey may be slipping in her ratings on the national stage, but Chicago loves her as much or more than ever.
In fact, the local icon ended the 2008-09 season, her 23rd on air, on a particularly strong note in the ratings in the Chicago market.
In the key 25- to 54-year-old adult demographic, the Chicago-based talk show diva scored a 3.6 Nielsen rating in May -- up from 3.0 in May 2008 and from 2.3 in September 2008, at the start of last season.
In addition to the fact Winfrey tapes her shows in Chicago, her talk fest continues to show strength here, despite declining national numbers, undoubtedly because of its berth on WLS-Channel 7, the dominant local television outlet throughout the day.
But Chicago likes talk shows. Winfrey's show isn't the only such program whose numbers have risen over the last year here, bucking the national trend.
"The View," also on WLS, scored a 2.7 in May, up from 2.1 a year earlier. And the much racier "Jerry Springer Show" on Fox-owned WPWR-Channel 50 maintained the same 0.2 rating in May that it had in September 2008, at the start of last season.
