The overnight Nielsen ratings for Chicago TV viewers are out. How did Jay Leno's new TV show do? In a word... WOW!

ABC7: 1.5 rating / 3.5 share (Dreamgirls movie)

FOX32: 0.9 rating / 2.0 share (Fox Chicago News)
Jay Leno's success was a great lead-in for NBC5's 10:00pm newscast, as well. Thanks to Jay, WMAQ-TV's news won the ratings for the night. Here are the 10:00pm-10:30pm local ratings:

This in turn helped out the Tonight Show last night just barely enough to at least tie the Late Show, which has been winning the Late Night battle recently. (It also helps that Letterman is in reruns this week.) Here is last night's local ratings for 10:30pm-11:30pm:

It will be another month or so before anybody can declare Jay's show a success. A much-hyped premiere, a dumb-ass Kanye West apologizing and Jerry Seinfeld's star power will make for good ratings for awhile. Starting next week, Leno's show will no longer be the new thing and will be up against brand new shows, not reruns. Let's see where it is in mid-October. NBC has their fingers crossed. A lot of TV critics have not been so hopeful today, even though they were a few days ago.
