.......
Jay Leno's debut tops chart

Talk show host Jay Leno opened really big Monday night in his prime time debut here on WMAQ-Channel 5. If Leno's ratings continue to hold up anywhere near where they were in his opening salvo -- which, it bears noting, came with an extraordinary avalanche of publicity -- his show could prove a big boost for WMAQ's perennially second-place 10 p.m. newscast, now fronted by Allison Rosati and Rob Stafford. At the very least, WMAQ's late news is likely to get more sampling in the days and weeks to come.

Leno blew away the competition on his first night in the Chicago market, pulling a 13.8 rating, more than three times the 4.2 number WLS-Channel 7 managed for its prime time rerun of the movie "Dreamgirls." No other local outlet came anywhere close to touching Leno's numbers.

With Leno as the lead-in, Channel 5's 10 p.m. news won the night, too, with a 10.3 rating, besting the perennial news leader Channel 7's 8.1. But by Day Two, Leno's new rating in Chicago had dropped to a 9.3 -- still good enough to place first in the time period. But Channel 5's 10 p.m. was back in second place with a 7.7 rating, and WLS' 10 p.m. news was back on top with a 9.0. As it typically does, the WLS late newscast Tuesday also bested its lead-in: a rerun of a Barbara Walters interview with the late Patrick Swayze that scored a 6.7 rating.
