'Girlfriend' Judy of WGN-AM 720 breaks her hip

The "girlfriend" gasps were audible when Judy Markey, former co-host of WGN-AM's (720) "Kathy & Judy Show," arrived Thursday at a public event in a wheelchair.
A car Markey was in last week in Arizona was "T-boned" in a serious accident, she said. Her pelvis was fractured in several places, and she joked she was relying on Vicodin to get her through the evening.
Markey and former co-host Kathy O'Malley spoke to a crowd that included a few dozen loyal listeners, known as "girlfriends," at the Association for Women Journalists-Chicago event at Columbia College.
They said they were given a "long leash" until the last few months of their two decades on the air, when the station's new management wanted more control over the show's content.
O'Malley said they understood why viewers were shocked and upset that they were suddenly off the air but doubted they would return on air together.
