WGN Radio took top honors at the National Association of Broadcasters 2009 Marconi Radio Awards. At the ceremony, held September 24 in Philadelphia, WGN Radio was named News/Talk Station of the Year. This is the tenth time since the awards were first presented in 1989 that WGN has been named a Marconi Award winner.
"We are honored to be recognized as the premier news and talk station in America," said Tom Langmyer, Vice President/General Manager of WGN Radio. "WGN's success is based on being relevant, continually evolving in news & entertainment; and being uniquely 'Chicago.' The W-G-N call letters are synonymous with Chicago!"
The other finalists in the News/Talk Station category were KGO-AM in San Francisco, KIRO-FM in Seattle, KLBJ-AM in Austin, and KOA-AM in Denver.
Prior to 2009, WGN Radio most recently won a Marconi Award as Major Market Station of the Year at the 2007 awards ceremony.
The NAB Marconi Awards Dinner & Show was hosted by Laura Ingraham and featured a live performance by renowned R&B artist Brian McKnight.
Established in 1989 and named after inventor and Nobel Prize winner Guglielmo Marconi, the NAB Marconi Radio Awards are given to radio stations and outstanding on-air personalities to recognize excellence in radio.
