It'll be old home week for Phil Donahue at Chicago's very own WGN-Channel 9.
Donahue, who originated his nationally syndicated talk show from the studios of the Tribune Co.-owned station from 1974 to 1982, will be the guest of honor from 6:45 to 9 a.m. Thursday on Channel 9's morning newscast.
Ostensibly here to promote his new anti-war documentary, "Body of War," Donahue has agreed to show viewers around his old digs.
Included in his tour will be the place he slept (under a table) during the Blizzard of '78 and the studio where he met achicagomedia.orgess (and his future wife) Marlo Thomas, who was a guest on his show.
The highlight of Channel 9's "Phil Donahue Day" will be a re-enactment of his trademark format -- complete with a live audience in Studio 2.
Clips from his groundbreaking show, which paved the way for Oprah Winfrey and others who followed, also will be featured.
"He's a broadcast hero of mine," said Dean Richards, the veteran entertainment reporter and critic, who will be hosting Donahue's visit along with news anchors Larry Potash and Robin Baumgarten.
"I'm as excited as when we did the 'Bozo, Gar and Ray' special. It's Chicago and WGN history coming home to the very studio where he worked and where he met Marlo for the first time."
Added Richards: "I really need to get more hobbies."
