Last Sunday turned out to be a Mother's Day Peggy Kusinski will never forget.
Just a few weeks away from delivering her third child, the veteran sportscaster at NBC-owned WMAQ-Channel 5 was on her way to visit her mother-in-law when the vehicle she and her family were traveling in was stuck broadside by another car.
The 18-year-old driver of the other car ran through a stop sign at full speed and smashed into the SUV occupied by Kusinski, her husband and their twin 5½-year-old boys.
The teen's car was totaled, but Kusinski's SUV took the hit like a tank. Thanks to safety belts and booster seats, the worst injury was a scrape to one of the boys.
After spending six hours in a west suburban hospital, she said, fetal monitoring and other tests showed that her soon-to-be-born daughter had shifted but is fine.
"I've been feeling very good during this pregnancy," said Kusinski, 44. "I'm proud I'm an older mother feeling so great."
A visit Monday to her own doctor confirmed that all is well -- and on track for an early June delivery. Despite the ordeal, she didn't miss a day of work.
"I know I'll be off for the whole summer, and I really want to make it through Bears' veteran minicamp," she added.
