The Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra will present WFMT-FM (98.7) and the WFMT Radio Network with the 2008 Ruth and Ken Davee Excellence in the Arts Award at the orchestra's concert on Friday.
The award was established by the IPO's board to recognize an individual, group of individuals or organization with exceptional commitment, vision, leadership and achievements that have resulted in major contributions to the arts and music throughout the state and/or nationally.
"Everyone at WFMT and the network is honored to receive this distinguished award," said Steve Robinson, general manager of WFMT and the WFMT Radio Network. "We work hard to present the best possible classical music service to listeners in the Chicago area and, through the network, to the U.S. and the world.
"To be recognized by the Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra with the Davee Award for the work we do is extremely gratifying. I know the entire staff at WFMT and the network is deeply touched, and I can only say on everyone's behalf that we pledge to continue providing a rich and varied classical music service for many years to come."
WFMT is widely recognized as the leading broadcaster of classical music and fine arts programming in the country. Currently enjoying the highest ratings and largest audience in its 56-year history, the station can be heard internationally through Internet streaming.
The WFMT Radio Network continues to thrive by producing and syndicating a diverse selection of outstanding musical performances to stations across the country.
WFMT's reach extends far beyond Chicago's borders. Through the WFMT Radio Network and its Beethoven and Jazz satellite networks, the station offers broadcasts of major symphony concerts, grand opera, drama, mainstream jazz and folk music to more than 650 outlets in the United States and around the world.
Unlike most radio stations, WFMT devotes enormous resources to live and taped presentations by performing artists.
IPO board president Stacy Holland cited WFMT officials for their extraordinary commitment to symphonic music.
WFMT Radio Network programs have won every major award and honor in broadcasting, including the Prix Italia, George Foster Peabody Award, Major Armstrong Awards, Ohio State Awards and awards from the International Radio Festival of New York.
"WFMT has created a supportive atmosphere in which classical music can thrive," Holland said. "The Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra's board of directors is delighted to recognize their outstanding accomplishments."
