George Ofman will be returning to the airTuesday, doing some fill-in work as a sports reporter for WGN-AM 720. He had hoped to begin the job several weeks earlier, but a not-so-funny thing happened: He lost his voice.
In late August, he noticed he was having trouble speaking. A doctor initially diagnosed him with acute laryngitis. However, after several weeks, the situation got worse.
"I could barely be heard," Mr. Ofman said. "It felt a little bit out of the 'Twilight Zone.' "
Finally, Mr. Ofman went for a second opinion and was diagnosed with a partially paralyzed vocal cord. Medication has allowed him to be heard again.
Although still not 100%, he is looking forward to using his voice again on the radio.
"They wanted me six-seven weeks ago, but I couldn't do it," Mr. Ofman said. "(Sports Director Dave Eanet) has been a saint. He could have found somebody else, but he waited for me."
It already had been a difficult time for Mr. Ofman. In the spring, he left his longtime job as a sports reporter for WSCR-AM 670 to join Chicagosportswebio.com. When the entire mess with David Hernandez brought down the Internet outlet, Mr. Ofman was out of a job.
"It's been hard finding work," Mr. Ofman said. "I'm looking forward to getting back at it."
