Bill and Walter together again

"No need to change your dial, just turn your clock back 20 years, and hang on."

That's how Bill Kurtis opened the 10 p.m. newscast on WBBM-Channel 2 Friday, which saw the renion of the station's legendary team of Kurtis and Walter Jacobson for one night only.

Though the pair plunged right into the day's news events, there was time for some fun and games and nostalgia.

Jay Levine, after doing an in-studio spot on city staffing, gave Jacobson a copy of the city budget and handed Kurtis a wireless modem card to play off of Kurtis' commercials for AT&T.

Meteorologist Steve Baskerville got kidded as a dated picture of him flashed on the screen, and Harry Porterfield, another old hand, showed up for a "Someone You should Know" segment.

Old clips of Bill and Walter in their prime were used to transition from commercials, and Jacobson took off his jacket and showed off his suspenders as he zeroed in on Mayor Daley for his perspective commentary with his trademark edge. He accused Daley of throwing away money like Bears quarterback "Jay Cutler throws away passes.''

"I guess Johnnie Morris wasn't available, so you're stuck with me," said sports reporter Ryan Baker, referring to another member of the old team.

And at the end, it was Jacobson who signed off, saying, "We'll be back on Monday. That time we'll be watching."
