Ebony revamps its images, announces new 'Power 150'

November 14, 2009

Ebony magazine, the iconic Chicago-based African-American publication being eyed for takeover by outside investors, announced its new "Power 150" list celebrating black trailblazers in business, science, technology, education and other fields.

Among those on the list this year are President Obama, Chris Rock, Al Sharpton and Venus and Serena Williams. The list is part of what Ebony executives call the magazine's "reinvigorated voice," which will cover a "wider variety of viewpoints and perspectives with a distinctive point of view."

New features in the magazine include the "Ebony Interview," starting with eco-warrior Van Jones, former White House special adviser for green jobs, and a "Legend" series that kicks off with an interview with poet Maya Angelou.

Ebony expects to announce more changes to its print, digital, entertainment and consumer products in the next several months, a spokeswoman said Friday.
