It is often very rare, especially if the minor league team you happen to like is somewhere near a major sports center such as Chicago, to find the minor league teams broadcasting on standard terrestrial radio stations. For the most part, minor league baseball broadcasts are confined to the internet with most teams requiring just one announcer and most games listenable via the team's website. There are exceptions, however, and the Gary SouthShore Railcats of the independent Northern League have been one of those exceptions for several seasons.
The Railcats have suddenly become one of the major baseball powerhouses in the Chicago area. They had an in-auspicious beginning when, during their first season, they had no home field to speak of and spend the entire season on the road. They are now comfortable and at home in downtown Gary, Indiana and have become a major part of life for Northwest Indiana residents.
They have recently announced that they will be broadcasting games on the radio station known as The Lakeshore which is also known as WLPR at 89.1 FM on the dial. Their first year broadcasting the Railcats was in 2009 and this deal extends that for another two years. The station will be broadcasting all of the Railcats games and now, with the new schedule released by the Northern League, that will be over 100 games.
Andy Viano is going to make his return as the play-by-play announcer for the Railcats. He is the team's Director of Media Relations and Broadcasting. This will be his third season behind the microphone for the 'Cats.
The deal also includes a partnership with Lakeshore Public Television. This means fans will be able to watch the show Inside Railcats Baseball three times during the new season.
