My personal opinion is that the "whos better than who" arguments work for some formats and not for others. The maturity of the format also comes in to play (Note: maturity does not mean "people younger than 25-54 demos"
The sports-talk arena is filled with competitive information in content.... who's winning a current game, who won, etc. Hearing a station take the Number One claim plays into that.
Top 40 formats play with it all the time. Nearly every market has "[Market Name]'s #1 Hit Station."
News/Talk formats may not say "We're number one" but they play to it in their own right, with slogans such as "When news happens, [market name] turns to us first."
That being said, it's also important to create the brand image that one station is the best in SOMETHING, in order to create validity in the listener's mind.
