Ballistics report confirm's Scott's suicide
December 3, 2009
BY MICHAEL SNEED | Sun-Times Columnist
Sneed hears the much anticipated ballistics reports on the gun used to kill Chicago School Board chief Michael Scott is done!
It proves Scott's death was suicide.
Police Supt. Jody Weis, who initially stopped short of calling his death a suicide, was awaiting ballistics reports to determine if the recovered gun was the weapon that killed Scott.
"The coroner's office may have already ruled it a suicide, but the Illinois State Police's forensic science unit -- which deals in firearms and tool marks -- can perform a ballistics test they can't," said a top source.
"They were able to match the spent bullet casing to Scott's own .380 caliber gun, which was found near his body."
• Upshot: "It also rules out the possibility of a yet to be discovered gun," the source added. "The gun residue was found on Scott's hand."
• The big question: Did someone else hold a hand over Scott's hand and force him to pull the trigger?
• Answer: No. Sneed is told there is no inconsistent gun residue hand pattern due to one hand lying on top of another.
• Hmmm: Sneed is told the ballistic report was completed several days ago. Is Weis now calling off the probe?
• Answer: "The investigation is still open," police spokesman Roderick Drew said Wednesday.
Pix nix?
Sneed hears rumbles Attorney General Eric Holder and/or one of his staffers requested no photos be taken of him with Michael Scott when Holder was in town to headline an Oct. 7 press conference on youth violence!
• The big question: If true, is it because a pix with Scott might have proved embarrassing later? If so, Why?
• Response: Matt Miller, a spokesman for the attorney general's office, told Sneed: "We can't comment on that one way or another."
• Backshot: The press conference, which was held weeks after the release of a video showing the fatal beating of a student near Fenger High School, was intended to sound a public alarm.
It's official!
The Scott File: Sneed is also told Mayor Daley received what is being characterized as "an official apology" from Fox 32 News reporter Tera Williams, the subject of Hizzoner's wrath at a recent City Hall press conference.
Or was it just a kind note from a sensitive journalist?
• Background: Daley erupted in anger and demanded an apology when Williams asked Hizzoner how he thought the sudden death of his friend, School Board chief Michael Scott, would impact Daley's career. (The question was asked three days after Scott's body was found in the Chicago River.)
• Foreground: Sneed is told Williams dispatched Daley a "card" stating she didn't mean in any way to offend him or be disrespectful and probably should have approached the question differently. (Calls to Williams were not returned, and Fox was going to get back to us.)
Dugout drubbing . . .
Sneed gets the "Dumber than a Box of Rocks award" for forgetting to put the word "grand" in front of the word "son" when referring to the relationship between legendary sportscaster Harry Caray and sports announcer Chip Caray.
The Woods report. . .
Club chat: In case you are wondering, Tiger Woods' wife used a wedge club to smash in the rear window of her hubby's car.
