Sports columnist Rick Morrissey joins Chicago Sun-Times

Chicago's best sports section just got better as award-winning columnist Rick Morrissey agreed to join the Chicago Sun-Times.

''I'm excited to be a part of this,'' Morrissey said Friday night. ''I see nothing but good things ahead for the Sun-Times. It's an exciting time to be a part of the paper.''

Morrissey, a native of Oak Park, had been at the rival Tribune since 1997 and became a sports columnist in 2000.

''Not only has Rick established a strong voice in Chicago, he is one of the best sports columnists in the country,'' Sun-Times sports editor Chris De Luca said. ''Adding Rick Morrissey is a major step forward as we continue to improve what is and has long been Chicago's best sports section.

''Now we have the best one-two punch in the country with Rick Morrissey and Rick Telander providing their award-winning commentary.''

Before returning home to Chicago in 1997, Morrissey worked for the Rocky Mountain News in Denver, spending eight of his 10 years there covering the Denver Broncos. He also had reporting stints at the Charlotte Observer, Fort Wayne Journal Gazette and Star Publications in the south suburbs.

Morrissey's Chicago roots run deep. He is a graduate of Fenwick High School and Northwestern University.

''Adding Rick to our already top-flight sports staff shows how serious we are about being the best and staying the best,'' Sun-Times Editor in Chief Don Hayner said. ''Nobody competes in this market as hard as we do. This is our city.''

Mike Kellams, the Tribune's associate managing editor for sports, announced the news to his staff Friday night.

''Rick has been a great colleague at the Tribune,'' Kellams wrote, ''and we wish him well in this new chapter of his career.''
