WFMT plans 5 days of all things Beethoven
December 11, 2009
In the wake of its record-breaking November pledge drive, fine arts radio station WFMT-FM (98.7) is planning a week of all things Beethoven.
Starting Monday and ending Dec. 18, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. the station will devote the vast majority of its airtime to a celebration of Ludwig van Beethoven, one of the most popular classical composers. The Beethoven blitz will expand to 14 hours on Wednesday, Dec. 16, Beethoven's actual birth date.
During the Beethoven marathon, WFMT will play all the composer's symphonies, string concertos and his opera "Fidelio." In addition, keyboard player David Schrader will perform pieces from the Beethoven repertoire live in the Levin Performance Studio. There will be readings from Beethoven's letters and commentary from prominent Beethoven conductors and instrumentalists.
WFMT General Manager Steve Robinson has said he viewed the significant uptick in contributions to the station last month as a sign listeners approve of how the station is programmed.
