: Ol' Uncle Lar returns to WLS
: Bored in retirement, 'Superjock' returns to WLS for one day only
: May 22, 2008
: BY ROBERT FEDER Sun-Times Columnist
: Truth be told, boredom is the reason Larry Lujack agreed to fly in from New Mexico and go back on Chicago radio for three hours next week.
: The Radio Hall of Famer and legendary "Superjock" will be the star attraction Monday on "The Big 89 Rewind," a salute to the rock 'n' roll era of WLS-AM (890), the former Top 40 powerhouse that now airs news/talk.
: Lujack will reunite on the air with his former sidekick, Tommy Edwards, from 9 a.m. to noon.
: "A lot of regular WLS listeners probably think that flipping the format from news/talk to rock for one day is bad radio," Lujack said. "But the good news is, bad radio is what I do best."
: As for the second annual Memorial Day flashback on WLS, Lujack wondered: "What does rock 'n' roll have to do with honoring our nation's war dead? I have no frickin' idea."
: Lujack, 67, acknowledged that he retired in 1987 because he was bored. "I did rock 'n' roll radio for 30 years, and it got to the point if I had to play 'Surfin' USA' one more time, I was gonna puke," he said.
: But now that he's been retired for two decades (except for a few brief comebacks), he said, he's become bored with retirement.
: "One of the reasons I'm bored and would like to do something for somebody again is that when you're retired, your wife actually expects you to do stuff like clean the garage," he said.
: Other jocks returning to WLS Monday will include Chuck Knapp, Fred Winston, John Records Landecker, Bill Bailey and Jeff Davis.
Love the reverb, love the jockin'. But musically - I heard Carrie Underwood and turned off the rewind. I don't remember jammin to that during the haydays. Disappointing.
