Every radio show on every radio station is Number 1 in some skewed demographic, somehow, someway. What WLS did was to separate data from 9:00am-11:00am -- which is not how Arbitron does it (they use 6:00am-10:00am & 10:00am-3:00pm) -- compare it as best they could to other station's 9:00am-11:00am raw data in various demographics (ages, genders, locations, etc.). Eventually, anyone can find a way they are #1 and apparently WLS somehow did that.
Looking at the normal Arbitron numbers for all ages & 25-54, WLS-AM did quite well for themselves in 2009. Their morning numbers (which included Don & Roma's ratings) and their afternoon ratings (which includes all of Rush Limbaugh's program and one hour of Roe Conn's show) are very nice indeed and numbers that WLS should be quite proud of. However, to crow about how they are #1 is a bit deceptive to the general public.
Mancow's show started out very strong and stayed strong for a while. It was especially strong around the time of his faked waterboarding stunt that gained him so much attention. The ratings for Mancow's show have slumped a bit since then, though. They are still Top 10 ratings for the most part, but not #1.
It makes me wonder if WIND's placement of Glenn Beck up against the Mancow/Cassidy show this month has a few people over there worried, which is why they bragging about how great they are...
: Personal Note: Are Mancow and Cassidy really number one, or is this only for one skewed demo block?
