The weekly music show that introduced the genre of "smooth jazz" to Chicago radio listeners is getting a new front man.
Rick O'Dell is stepping down after 21 years as host of "The Smooth Jazz Sunday Brunch" (and its predecessors) to devote more time to his dual roles as midday personality and music director at Clear Channel Radio WNUA-FM (95.5).
As of June 15, Scott Adams will take over as host from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sundays on WNUA. Adams also will continue to host "The Sounds of Brazil."
At the same time, O'Dell will launch "The WNUA Spotlight," a one-hour show at 7 p.m. Sundays focusing on specific artists.
Six months before WNUA signed on with full-time smooth jazz in 1987, O'Dell began airing it once a week on "The Sunday Lite Brunch" over at Bonneville International's WCLR.
He moved to WNUA in 1989 and brought the popular Sunday morning franchise with him.
"For 21 years, it was an enormously fun and fulfilling project -- a seed which sprouted into a career in smooth jazz that I could never have imagined," he said. "How often does one get a chance to be in on the absolute ground floor of a new concept in radio and see it through to its fruition years down the road?"
